The Blue Triggerfish, or Odonus niger, is a striking marine species native to the tropical Indo-Pacific region. As the only member of its genus, it showcases a unique blend of vibrant blue and yellow hues, making it a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts. This species is often recognized by its distinctive red teeth, which contribute to its common names like redtoothed triggerfish and redfang triggerfish. The Blue Triggerfish typically inhabits coral reefs, where it can be found in shallow waters, often hiding among the crevices and coral structures.

In terms of behavior, the Blue Triggerfish is known for its bold and territorial nature. It often exhibits fascinating interactions with its environment, using its strong jaws to crush hard-shelled invertebrates as part of its diet. These fish are generally active swimmers and can display a range of colors based on their mood, ranging from vibrant blue to darker shades. Socially, they may exhibit aggressive tendencies, especially during breeding seasons, which makes them an intriguing species for observation.

The habitat of the Blue Triggerfish is primarily rocky and coral reef areas, where they play a crucial role in the ecosystem by controlling populations of sea urchins and other invertebrates. The ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 24-28°C, a salinity level of 1.020-1.025 ppt, and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4. A minimum tank size of 500 liters is recommended to accommodate their active swimming behavior and territorial nature.

Feeding the Blue Triggerfish requires a diet rich in protein. They are carnivorous and thrive on a diet of high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as shrimp, mussels, and cockles. Regular feeding schedules and a varied diet help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

In terms of compatibility, the Blue Triggerfish can be aggressive towards other fish, especially those of similar size and shape. It is best to house them with larger, more robust species while avoiding smaller or more timid fish. Acclimation should be handled carefully, allowing the fish to gradually adjust to new water conditions. A quarantine period of at least two weeks is recommended to prevent the introduction of diseases into the main aquarium.

The Blue Triggerfish is suitable for shipping due to its hardy nature; however, care must be taken during transport. The ideal packing density is one fish per 20 liters to ensure adequate space and reduce stress. Maintain a stable temperature between 24-26°C during shipping. As a species not listed under CITES, it does not require special permits for export.
