The Gilded Triggerfish, or Blue Throat Triggerfish (xanthichthys auromarginatus), is a vibrant marine species found predominantly in the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. Females exhibit a striking combination of blue, yellow, and green hues, with a distinctive blue throat that sets them apart from males. This species typically inhabits shallow waters, where they can be observed darting among the corals, showcasing their bold colors and active behavior.

In terms of natural history, Gilded Triggerfish are known for their territorial nature. They often establish a home range within their habitat, defending it fiercely from intruders, especially during breeding seasons. Their diet primarily consists of small invertebrates and hard-shelled organisms, which they adeptly crush with their strong jaws. This feeding behavior not only influences their physical adaptations but also their ecological role as both predator and prey within the reef community.

Gilded Triggerfish are also notable for their unique social behavior. To ensure the health and well-being of Gilded Triggerfish in an aquarium setting, maintaining optimal water parameters is crucial. They thrive in temperatures ranging from 24°C to 28°C, with a salinity level of 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. The pH should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4 to mimic their natural habitat.

Feeding Gilded Triggerfish requires a varied diet to maintain their health. They are predominantly carnivorous, so offering high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as shrimp, clams, and other shellfish is recommended. Regular feeding, ideally two to three times a day, will ensure they receive the necessary nutrients.

When introducing Gilded Triggerfish to a new aquarium, a slow acclimation process is essential. This can be done using the drip acclimation method to minimize stress. Quarantine is also advised for at least two weeks before adding them to a community tank, as they can be susceptible to certain marine diseases.

Compatibility is an important consideration, as Gilded Triggerfish can be territorial. They generally do well with other robust species but may exhibit aggression towards smaller fish or similar-looking species. A larger tank (minimum 200 liters) is recommended to provide ample space for them to establish their territory while cohabitating peacefully.

Gilded Triggerfish are suitable for shipping, provided they are packed carefully to minimize stress. A packing density of 1 fish per 10 liters is recommended to ensure enough space for movement. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a stable environment during transit is crucial. Currently, there are no specific CITES restrictions on this species, allowing for easier export from Bali.
