Sexy Shrimp

Thor amboinensis, commonly referred to as the Sexy Shrimp or squat anemone shrimp, is a vibrant species native to the shallow, warm waters of the Indo-West Pacific and parts of the Atlantic Ocean. These small crustaceans are known for their striking coloration and unique mating dance, which involves a series of rhythmic movements that make them a delightful addition to any marine aquarium. Their symbiotic relationship with sea anemones and corals not only highlights their ecological role but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of reef tanks.

In terms of appearance, Sexy Shrimp are relatively small, typically reaching a maximum size of around 4 to 5 centimeters. They possess a transparent body adorned with bright orange and white markings, which serve as a warning to potential predators about their association with toxic anemones. Their elongated, slender form allows them to easily navigate through crevices and among coral branches, making them well-suited for reef environments.

Behaviorally, these shrimp are gregarious and tend to establish large colonies around their host anemones, where they perform their signature dance to attract mates. They are also known for their agility and ability to quickly retreat into the safety of their host when threatened. This dynamic behavior, combined with their vivid coloration, makes them a fascinating species to observe in a marine setting.

Their habitat typically includes coral reefs, where they thrive in symbiotic relationships with various marine invertebrates. These interactions not only provide the shrimp with protection but also benefit their host by cleaning them of parasites and debris. The Sexy Shrimp's preference for shallow waters makes them readily available for collectors and exporters, particularly in regions like Bali, Indonesia, where their population flourishes in pristine coral ecosystems.

For successful care of Sexy Shrimp, it is essential to maintain stable water conditions. Ideal temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C, with salinity levels between 1.020 and 1.025 ppt. The pH should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4 to ensure optimal health. A minimum tank size of 40 liters is recommended to provide ample space for these active shrimp.

Feeding should consist of high-quality marine foods such as finely crushed pellets, frozen or live foods including brine shrimp and mysis shrimp, and algae-based foods to ensure a balanced diet. They are omnivorous and will benefit from dietary variety. When introducing Sexy Shrimp to a new aquarium, gradual acclimation is crucial to reduce stress; use a drip acclimation method over several hours.

Compatibility with other marine species is generally good, as they are peaceful and can coexist with many reef fish and invertebrates. However, avoid housing them with aggressive species that may pose a threat. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the spread of disease and ensure they are healthy before introducing them to the main display tank.

Sexy Shrimp are suitable for shipping under controlled conditions, requiring careful packing to minimize stress during transport. A packing density of 1-2 shrimp per liter is recommended to ensure adequate space. They are sensitive to extreme temperatures, so maintaining a stable temperature range of 22°C to 26°C is crucial during shipping. Currently, there are no specific CITES restrictions on this species.
