Their flat, elongated bodies allow them to glide effortlessly over the substrate, resembling a dance as they move, which is how they earned their common name.

In terms of natural history, Dance Slugs are primarily found in shallow reef environments, often hiding among coral crevices and under rocks. They are carnivorous, feeding mainly on small invertebrates, including the larvae of various marine organisms. Their diet not only plays a role in their growth and health but also influences their vibrant coloration, which can vary depending on their food sources.

Behaviorally, Dance Slugs are known for their unique locomotion. They utilize cilia on their undersides to create a gliding motion, which allows them to navigate their environment while searching for food. These slugs are generally solitary and can be territorial, especially during feeding. To successfully care for Dance Slugs, it is essential to replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible. They require a water temperature range of 24-28°C, with a salinity of 32-35 ppt. The pH should be maintained between 8.1 and 8.4 to support their health and vitality. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide adequate space and stability.

Feeding Dance Slugs is relatively straightforward; they thrive on a diet of small live food sources such as brine shrimp, microfauna, and finely chopped marine flesh. Regular feeding is essential to maintain their vibrant colors and overall health. Compatibility-wise, they should be housed with peaceful tank mates that will not pose a threat or compete aggressively for food.

Acclimating Dance Slugs to a new environment should be done slowly over several hours to minimize stress. Quarantine for at least two weeks is advisable for new arrivals to ensure they are healthy and free of parasites before introducing them to the main display tank. Regular water quality testing and maintenance will further aid in their care and longevity.

Dance Slugs are sensitive to changes in temperature and water quality, making proper shipping methods crucial. They should be packed in insulated containers with adequate oxygen supply and minimal water to reduce movement. A temperature range of 20-24°C is optimal during transport. CITES status for this species is currently not listed, making them easier to export under normal regulations.
