Hairy Mushrooms (Rhodactis spp.) are captivating corals known for their unique textures and brilliant hues, primarily found in the Indo-Pacific region. Visually, Hairy Mushrooms are characterized by their fleshy, lobed bodies adorned with numerous short, hair-like tentacles that can sway gently with water movement. The purple and blue color morphs are especially sought after due to their striking appearance, providing a vibrant contrast against the background of any aquarium. These corals can vary in size, typically reaching up to 15 cm in diameter, and can expand significantly when fully inflated.

Behaviorally, Hairy Mushrooms are relatively peaceful and can coexist with a variety of other reef inhabitants. They can reproduce asexually by budding, allowing them to spread and fill available space in the aquarium. In the wild, they often serve as an important habitat for small marine organisms, providing shelter and protection.

In terms of habitat, these corals are typically found in warm, shallow waters with good water movement, where they can capture plankton and detritus, supplemented by photosynthesis from their symbiotic zooxanthellae. This dual feeding strategy allows them to thrive in diverse environments, making them a resilient choice for aquarium settings.

To ensure optimal health for Hairy Mushrooms, maintain water parameters within the ideal range: temperature between 24-28°C, salinity of 1.020-1.025 ppt, and a pH between 8.1-8.4. Provide moderate lighting conditions, as they can adapt to both high and low light but prefer a balanced approach. Ensure good water flow to prevent detritus accumulation and to promote healthy expansion of the coral.

Feeding Hairy Mushrooms is relatively straightforward. While they derive energy from light through photosynthesis, supplementing their diet with small meaty foods such as brine shrimp or marine snow will enhance their growth and vibrancy. They do not require frequent feeding; 1-2 times a week is sufficient.

Compatibility is key when housing these corals; they are generally peaceful but can be aggressive towards other corals if placed too close. It's best to provide adequate spacing with other tank inhabitants. Before introducing Hairy Mushrooms to your display tank, acclimate them slowly to minimize stress, ideally over a period of several hours. Quarantine new specimens for at least two weeks to prevent the introduction of pests or diseases into your main system.

Hairy Mushrooms are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness, but proper packaging is essential to ensure they remain moist and protected. Aim for a packing density that allows for adequate water circulation and space to prevent damage. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintain a stable range of 22-26°C during transit. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions on Hairy Mushrooms, making them easier to export.
