Hydnophora microconos, commonly known as the Green Small Colony, is a captivating coral species native to the Coral Triangle. This species forms dense, bushy colonies that can thrive in various marine environments. Its vibrant green coloration is attributed to the symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, photosynthetic algae that live within its tissues, providing not only color but essential nutrients through photosynthesis.

In terms of appearance, Hydnophora microconos exhibits small, tightly packed branches that can create stunning formations in aquariums. Each branch is adorned with small polyps that extend during feeding and are retracted when the coral is not active. The coral's structure is both robust and delicate, making it a visually striking addition to reef tanks while also providing hiding spots and habitat for small marine species.

Behaviorally, this coral species is generally peaceful, making it suitable for community tanks. However, it can exhibit aggressive tendencies towards other corals if placed too closely, particularly when it comes to competing for space. In its natural habitat, Hydnophora microconos is often found in shallow waters, where it receives ample sunlight, allowing it to flourish and grow quickly.

This coral typically inhabits areas with moderate water flow and can be found on both hard substrates and sandy bottoms. Its resilience makes it a popular choice among marine aquarists looking to create a vibrant and diverse underwater landscape.
When caring for Hydnophora microconos, maintaining stable water parameters is crucial. Optimal temperature should be between 24°C to 28°C, with a salinity range of 32-35 ppt. The pH level should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4 to ensure healthy growth. Adequate lighting is essential, as this coral species relies on photosynthesis; therefore, strong, yet diffused light is recommended.

Feeding Hydnophora microconos involves providing a combination of phytoplankton and zooplankton, supplemented with coral-specific foods. While it thrives on nutrients from its symbiotic algae, additional feeding can enhance growth and coloration. It is advisable to monitor the coral's response to feeding closely, adjusting amounts as needed.

In terms of compatibility, this coral generally coexists well with a variety of fish and invertebrates but should be placed at a sufficient distance from aggressive corals. Acclimation should be done gradually to minimize stress, ideally over several hours, and quarantine new specimens for at least two weeks before introducing them to an established tank to prevent the spread of potential diseases.
Hydnophora microconos is suitable for shipping due to its robust structure. It should be packed securely to prevent damage, with adequate cushioning and moisture retention. Maintaining a temperature range of 22°C to 26°C during transit is critical to ensure the coral's health. As of now, there are no specific CITES restrictions on this species, making it easier for exporters to handle.
