The African Butterfly Peacock, scientifically known as Aulonacara jacobfreibeigi, is a striking freshwater fish native to the African Great Lakes, particularly Lake Malawi. This species is highly prized among aquarists for its dazzling colors and interesting social behaviors. Males typically exhibit bright, iridescent hues of blue and yellow, while females are more subdued, showcasing a blend of browns and yellows that provide excellent camouflage among rocky substrates.

In terms of natural history, the African Butterfly Peacock thrives in rocky environments where it can find shelter and breeding sites. This species exhibits a fascinating breeding behavior known as mouthbrooding, where females carry fertilized eggs in their mouths until they hatch, ensuring the safety of the young fry. Their diet in the wild primarily consists of small invertebrates, algae, and detritus, making them opportunistic feeders that play a significant role in their ecosystem.

Behaviorally, African Butterfly Peacocks are known for their territorial nature, particularly during breeding seasons. Males will display their vibrant colors to attract females and ward off competitors. Despite their assertiveness, they can coexist peacefully with other peaceful cichlid species given that they have enough space and hiding spots. Habitat-wise, these fish prefer slightly alkaline water with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas. Their natural habitat features rocky substrates, which should be replicated in captivity to provide a sense of security and encourage natural behaviors. To ensure the health and well-being of African Butterfly Peacocks, maintaining optimal water parameters is crucial. Ideal water temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C, with a pH level between 7.5 and 8.5. These fish prefer moderately hard water, typically around 10-20 dGH. A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories for multiple males, reducing aggression.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, and vegetable matter to mimic their natural diet. It's essential to feed them 2-3 times daily in small amounts that they can consume within a few minutes.

Compatibility is key, as these fish can be territorial. They do well with other peaceful cichlids and community fish of similar size. When introducing new fish, gradual acclimation to the established tank is recommended, using the drip acclimation method. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the introduction of diseases into the main tank.

The African Butterfly Peacock is suitable for shipping, but care must be taken to maintain stable water temperatures during transit. Packing density should allow for adequate space, ideally 1-2 fish per liter, to minimize stress. It is essential to maintain temperatures between 24°C and 28°C during shipping. This species is not listed under CITES, simplifying export procedures.
