The Walking Catfish (Clarias batrachus) is a fascinating species of freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia. This remarkable fish has adapted to its environment by developing the ability to 'walk' across dry land using its pectoral fins. Its unique method of locomotion allows it to navigate between water bodies in search of food or more suitable habitats, making it a highly resilient species. Typically, these fish inhabit slow-moving waters, including ponds, swamps, streams, and even flooded rice paddies, where they thrive in various conditions, including temporary pools that may dry up.
To ensure the health and vitality of Walking Catfish, maintain water temperatures between 24°C and 30°C, with a pH level ranging from 6.5 to 7.5. Given their omnivorous diet, they should be fed a varied diet of high-quality pellets, live or frozen foods such as worms, shrimp, and insects. These fish can be territorial, especially as they mature, so it’s best to keep them in larger tanks of at least 200 liters to reduce aggression and provide ample swimming space. Acclimation should be gradual, introducing them to new environments slowly to minimize stress. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent disease transmission to other aquarium inhabitants.
Walking Catfish are suited for shipping due to their hardiness. When packing, ensure adequate oxygen in the bags and maintain a temperature range of 24-28°C. Packing density should not exceed 1 fish per liter to reduce stress during transit. This species is not listed under CITES, making export simpler, but always check local regulations before shipping.
