The Sulawesi Six Banded Sulawesi Shrimp (Caridina holthuisi) is a striking freshwater shrimp species endemic to the Malili lake system in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Renowned for its distinctive six banded coloration, this species captivates aquarists with its vibrant hues and intricate patterns. Named in honor of Dutch carcinologist Lipke Holthuis, it plays a role in the unique ecosystem of the lakes it inhabits, including Lake Towuti, Lake Matano, and Lake Mahalona, as well as the Petea River.

In terms of appearance, the Sulawesi Six Banded Sulawesi Shrimp exhibits a range of colors from bright oranges and reds to deep blues, accentuated by its characteristic six dark bands that run across its body. This striking visual appeal makes it a sought-after species in the aquarium trade. The shrimp typically measure around 3-4 cm in length, making them an ideal addition to smaller aquariums or shrimp tanks.

Behaviorally, these shrimp are generally peaceful and can coexist with other small freshwater species. They exhibit interesting social behaviors, often seen grazing on biofilm and algae in their habitat. To successfully care for Sulawesi Six Banded Sulawesi Shrimp, maintain water parameters that closely resemble their natural habitat. Ideal temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. It's crucial to provide soft water, with a hardness of 2-10 dGH, to promote their well-being. A minimum tank size of 20 liters is recommended to allow for adequate swimming space and territoriality.

Feeding these shrimp requires a balanced diet consisting of high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and biofilm. They are scavengers by nature and will also consume detritus and algae found in the tank. Compatibility is generally good with other small, peaceful species; however, avoid aggressive fish that may predate on them.

Acclimation is critical for these sensitive shrimp. Introduce them slowly to the aquarium environment by floating the bag in the tank for 15-30 minutes and gradually mixing tank water into the bag. A quarantine period of at least two weeks is advisable to monitor for any signs of disease and ensure they are healthy before introducing them to the main tank.

Sulawesi Six Banded Sulawesi Shrimp are suitable for shipping, provided proper precautions are taken. During transport, maintain a water temperature between 20°C and 25°C to minimize stress. Packing density should be moderate to ensure sufficient oxygen levels and reduce stress during transit.
