The Green Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) is a captivating freshwater fish native to North and Central America, particularly from Veracruz, Mexico to northern Belize. This species belongs to the Poeciliidae family and is renowned for its vibrant coloration and active nature. Live-bearers, platys are easy to breed and are often seen in aquariums due to their friendly disposition and adaptability to various water conditions.

In terms of appearance, the Green Platy showcases a stunning array of colors, predominantly green, with variations that can include yellow, red, and blue hues, especially in selectively bred varieties. They have a compressed body shape, a broad tail fin, and a distinctive dorsal fin that adds to their visual appeal. Adult platys typically reach a size of up to 6 cm, making them suitable for smaller community tanks.

Behaviorally, Green Platys are peaceful and sociable, thriving in groups. They exhibit interesting schooling behavior and are often seen exploring their environment. These fish are not only attractive but also serve as excellent indicators of a healthy aquarium due to their active nature. In the wild, they inhabit shallow waters, including rivers, lakes, and ponds, where they enjoy vegetation and cover to hide from predators.

Their natural habitat provides insight into their preference for well-planted tanks, which mimic their native environments. With the right care and conditions, Green Platys can live for several years in captivity, making them a favorite among both novice and experienced aquarists.
For successful care of Green Platys, maintaining optimal water parameters is crucial. A temperature range of 22°C to 28°C, with a pH level between 6.8 and 8.0, will ensure their health and vitality. It is best to keep them in a minimum tank size of 40 liters to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress.

Feeding Green Platys is straightforward as they are omnivorous. A varied diet consisting of high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, will promote vibrant colors and robust health. It’s essential to avoid overfeeding, as this can lead to water quality issues.

In terms of compatibility, Green Platys are generally peaceful and can coexist with other community fish. However, it is advisable to avoid aggressive species that may stress them. During acclimation, introduce them gradually to new environments to minimize shock. A quarantine period of at least two weeks for new arrivals is recommended to ensure they are disease-free before adding them to the main tank.
Green Platys are well-suited for shipping due to their hardiness. They should be packed with care, allowing for adequate oxygen and space to minimize stress during transportation. Ideal shipping temperatures range from 22°C to 28°C. They are not listed under CITES, making export straightforward.
