The Threadfin Rainbow (Iriantherina werneri) is a small yet striking freshwater fish native to the waters of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Known for its elongated fins and iridescent body, this species showcases a vivid palette of blues, greens, and yellows, making it a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts and importers alike. Adult Threadfin Rainbows typically reach a size of around 5 cm, making them suitable for smaller to medium-sized aquariums.

In their natural habitat, Threadfin Rainbows inhabit shallow, slow-moving waters such as rivers, streams, and floodplains. They thrive in densely vegetated areas where they can find both shelter and food. Their diet primarily consists of small invertebrates and algae, which they forage for among the aquatic plants. This fish species is also known for its peaceful temperament, making it an excellent addition to community tanks with other gentle fish.

Behaviorally, Threadfin Rainbows are social creatures that prefer to be kept in groups, ideally in schools of five or more. This schooling behavior not only enhances their natural display but also reduces stress, allowing them to exhibit their vibrant colors more prominently. During breeding, males can display more vivid colors and engage in elaborate courtship rituals, further captivating observers.

To maintain their health and vibrancy, it’s important to replicate their natural environment as closely as possible, offering plenty of plants and open swimming spaces. The addition of soft, diffused lighting can also enhance the beauty of these fish, as they reflect light beautifully in their natural colors.
Threadfin Rainbows require specific water parameters to thrive in captivity. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C to 28°C, with a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5. Regular water changes and a filtration system that maintains good water quality are essential for their health. They do best in a well-planted aquarium that mimics their natural habitat, providing both cover and open swimming areas.

Feeding Threadfin Rainbows is relatively straightforward, as they are omnivorous. A diet rich in high-quality flake foods, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods such as daphnia and brine shrimp will promote their health and vibrant colors. It’s advisable to feed them multiple small portions throughout the day rather than one large feeding.

In terms of compatibility, Threadfin Rainbows are generally peaceful and can be housed with other non-aggressive species. However, it’s crucial to avoid larger, more aggressive fish that may intimidate or harm them. Acclimation should be done slowly to minimize stress; floating the bag in the aquarium for about 15-20 minutes before introducing them can help. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the spread of diseases.
Threadfin Rainbows are suitable for shipping due to their hardy nature. They should be packed in breathable bags with adequate oxygen and minimal water to minimize movement during transit. Ideal shipping temperatures should be maintained between 24°C and 28°C. It is essential to monitor them closely during shipping, especially in extreme weather conditions. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions on this species, making them readily available for export.
