The Auro Tetra (Moenkhausia ceros) is a captivating freshwater fish native to the rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia. Known for its shimmering scales that display a vivid blend of yellow, orange, and iridescent blue, the Auro Tetra is not only visually appealing but also known for its active and social behavior. Typically found in schools, these fish thrive in dynamic environments, showcasing their vibrant colors as they dart around the aquarium.

In terms of appearance, the Auro Tetra features a streamlined body that can grow up to 6 cm in length. Its remarkable coloration is complemented by a distinct black stripe running along its body, which adds to its aesthetic appeal. The combination of its striking coloration and active swimming patterns makes the Auro Tetra a delightful addition to any community tank, where it can interact with other species.

The natural habitat of the Auro Tetra consists of slow-moving waters with abundant vegetation, where they seek shelter among plants and driftwood. This environment not only provides safety from predators but also offers ample foraging opportunities for food. Their preference for well-planted tanks mimics their natural surroundings, encouraging natural behaviors and reducing stress in captivity.

Behaviorally, Auro Tetras are known to be peaceful and non-aggressive, making them compatible with a variety of other freshwater species. They exhibit schooling behavior, which is essential for their well-being, as they feel more secure and exhibit more natural behaviors when in groups. Their active nature and engaging interactions can bring life to any aquarium setup, making them a popular choice for both novice and experienced aquarists.
To successfully care for Auro Tetras, it is important to maintain stable water parameters. Ideal water temperature ranges from 22°C to 28°C, with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5. Regular water changes are crucial to ensure a clean environment, as these fish are sensitive to poor water quality. A minimum tank size of 60 liters is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and to accommodate a small school of at least six individuals.

Feeding Auro Tetras is relatively straightforward, as they are omnivores. A varied diet including high-quality flakes, granules, and occasional live or frozen food such as brine shrimp or daphnia can keep them healthy and vibrant. It's important to feed smaller portions multiple times a day rather than one large feeding to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.

When introducing Auro Tetras to a new aquarium, a gradual acclimation process is essential to minimize stress. Floating the sealed bag in the aquarium for about 15-20 minutes before releasing them allows them to adjust to the water temperature. Additionally, quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the spread of potential diseases to existing tank inhabitants. With the right care, Auro Tetras can thrive and add dynamic movement and color to any freshwater aquarium.
Auro Tetras are suitable for shipping and can be packed in breathable bags with adequate oxygen supply. A packing density of up to 10 fish per liter is recommended to ensure their comfort during transit. Ideal shipping temperatures should be maintained between 22°C to 28°C to prevent temperature shock. While Auro Tetras are not listed under CITES, it is always advisable to check local regulations regarding the export of aquatic species.
