This small but vibrant fish is distinguished by its stunning magenta hue, which can shift to deep purple under certain lighting conditions. The body is elongated and streamlined, with a slightly pointed snout, allowing it to navigate through complex reef environments with ease. Adult Magenta Dottybacks typically reach a maximum length of around 8 cm, making them an ideal choice for reef aquariums.

In terms of behavior, the Magenta Dottyback is known for its semi-aggressive nature, particularly towards its own kind and similar-sized fish. They are highly territorial and will often claim a specific area of the aquarium as their own. This species exhibits interesting social behaviors, often darting in and out of crevices and caves, which serve as both hiding spots and breeding sites. In the wild, they are often found in pairs or small groups, forming a hierarchy that is crucial for their social structure.

Magenta Dottybacks inhabit shallow reefs, typically at depths of 5 to 30 meters, where they can find ample hiding spots among the coral. They thrive in environments rich in live rock and coral, which provide shelter and breeding grounds. Their natural habitat is characterized by clear waters that support a diverse array of marine life. This species is primarily diurnal, actively foraging during the day and retreating to their shelters at night, helping to avoid predation.

Due to their vibrant appearance and engaging behavior, Magenta Dottybacks are popular among aquarium enthusiasts. When properly cared for, they can live for several years in captivity, making them a worthwhile addition to marine aquariums focused on displaying colorful reef fish.

For optimal care of the Magenta Dottyback, maintaining stable water parameters is crucial. Ideal temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C, with salinity levels between 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. The pH should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4 to mimic their natural reef environment. It’s essential to provide a minimum tank size of 100 liters to allow adequate swimming space and territorial claims.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet rich in protein, including high-quality flake foods, frozen brine shrimp, and live or frozen mysis shrimp. This species is carnivorous and requires a balanced diet to maintain its vibrant coloration and overall health.

In terms of compatibility, Magenta Dottybacks can be housed with other semi-aggressive fish but should be introduced to the aquarium carefully to minimize territorial disputes. Acclimation should be done slowly over a period of several hours to reduce stress, and it’s advisable to quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks before introducing them to the main tank. Regular monitoring for signs of stress or disease is essential for maintaining a healthy aquatic environment.

Magenta Dottybacks are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness, but care should be taken to minimize stress during transport. Packing density should be moderate to allow movement without overcrowding. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations; therefore, maintaining a stable temperature between 24°C and 28°C during shipping is crucial. As of now, there are no CITES restrictions on this species, making it easier for exporters to meet legal requirements.
