The Flame Basslet (Mirolabrychthys ignitus) is a striking marine fish native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. Known for its vibrant coloration, it showcases a brilliant orange-red body complemented by a contrasting yellowish hue on its fins. This stunning appearance makes it a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts and collectors alike. Adult Flame Basslets typically reach lengths of up to 7.5 cm, making them a manageable size for home aquariums.

In their natural habitat, Flame Basslets are often found in small groups around rocky crevices and coral structures, where they seek shelter from predators. They are territorial fish, displaying intriguing behaviors such as darting in and out of their hiding spots. Their sociable nature allows them to coexist with various reef fish, but they can also exhibit territorial aggression towards their own kind if not provided with ample space.

Flame Basslets thrive in vibrant, well-established reef environments where they can access plenty of hiding spots. These fish prefer areas with moderate water flow and abundant coral cover, which provides them with both food and shelter. Their diet in the wild primarily consists of zooplankton and small crustaceans, which they hunt among the coral.

Given their beauty and captivating behavior, Flame Basslets are increasingly sought after in the aquarium trade. They adapt well to aquarium life when provided with suitable conditions and care, offering hobbyists an engaging species to observe and enjoy in their aquatic displays.
For successful care of Flame Basslets in an aquarium setting, maintaining stable water parameters is essential. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C to 28°C, with a salinity of 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. pH levels should ideally be kept between 8.1 and 8.4, ensuring a healthy environment for this species. It is recommended to provide at least a 100-liter tank to accommodate their territorial nature and allow for sufficient swimming space.

Flame Basslets are carnivorous and should be fed a varied diet consisting of high-quality pellets, frozen foods, and live offerings such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Regular feeding will enhance their coloration and overall health. When introducing new fish to an aquarium, gradual acclimation is crucial to minimize stress. It is advisable to use a drip acclimation method over a period of several hours.

In terms of compatibility, Flame Basslets can coexist with a variety of reef fish but should be monitored for aggression towards their own species. It's best to keep them in pairs or small groups in larger tanks. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the introduction of disease into established systems. Routine water changes and good filtration will promote a healthy living environment for these vibrant fish.
Flame Basslets are suitable for shipping due to their relatively hardy nature. They should be packed in breathable bags with adequate oxygen to maintain water quality during transit. A packing density of 1 fish per 2 liters is recommended to minimize stress. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations; therefore, maintaining a stable temperature between 24°C and 28°C during shipping is crucial. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions on this species.
