Synanceia horrida, commonly known as the Estuary Stonefish, is a remarkable species found in the Indo-Pacific region. This benthic fish is renowned for its exceptional camouflage, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its rocky and sandy surroundings. Its mottled appearance, characterized by rough, spiny skin, not only aids in hiding from predators but also serves as a warning to potential threats, given its highly venomous nature. The Estuary Stonefish is considered one of the most dangerous fish in the world, with venom that can cause extreme pain, paralysis, and even death if not treated promptly.

This species typically inhabits shallow waters, including estuaries, lagoons, and coral reefs, where it remains motionless for long periods. Its ambush hunting style involves lying in wait for unsuspecting prey to approach. The Estuary Stonefish primarily feeds on small fish and crustaceans, using its excellent eyesight to detect movement in the water. Its ability to remain still makes it an effective predator, and it can strike with remarkable speed when capturing its meal.

In aquariums, the Estuary Stonefish is a popular exhibit due to its unique appearance and intriguing behavior. However, it requires careful handling and respect due to its venomous spines. Public aquaria often display these fish in specialized tanks that mimic their natural habitat, providing ample hiding spots and suitable substrate for them to thrive. Due to their unique adaptations and ecological importance, they represent a fascinating species for marine enthusiasts and researchers alike.
The Estuary Stonefish demands specific care to thrive in captivity. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 24-28°C, salinity of 30-35 ppt, and a pH of 7.8-8.4. A minimum tank size of 150 liters is recommended to provide ample space and proper filtration. The tank should mimic its natural habitat, featuring sandy substrates and hiding spots like rocks and caves to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors.

Feeding these fish can be done with a diet rich in meaty foods such as live or frozen shrimp, small fish, and other seafood. It is crucial to avoid overfeeding, which can lead to water quality issues. Compatibility should be approached with caution; while they can cohabit with other robust marine species, they may show aggression towards smaller tank mates due to their predatory nature.

Acclimation should be gradual to minimize stress, ideally over several hours. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the spread of diseases. Regular monitoring of water quality and timely water changes are essential for maintaining a healthy environment for the Estuary Stonefish.
Estuary Stonefish are suitable for shipping, but care must be taken to ensure stable temperatures between 24-28°C during transit. Packing density should be low to avoid stress, and they should be shipped in well-oxygenated bags with adequate water volume. This species is not listed under CITES, but proper permits may be necessary for export, so check local regulations.
