The Chinamanfish (Symphorus nematophorus) is a striking marine species native to the Coral Triangle, particularly abundant in the waters around Bali, Indonesia. This species is recognized for its elongated body, vibrant yellow and blue coloration, and distinctive dorsal fin, making it a favorite among aquarists and collectors. As a member of the family Labridae, it showcases unique characteristics that differentiate it from other marine fish.

In the wild, Chinamanfish inhabit coral reefs and rocky areas, where they seek shelter among crevices and coral formations. They are typically found at depths ranging from 5 to 30 meters. These fish are known for their social behavior, often forming small groups, which adds to their dynamic display in an aquarium setting. Their natural diet consists primarily of small invertebrates and algae, which they forage for among the reef structures.

Chinamanfish exhibit interesting behaviors, including their unique swimming style and interactions with other reef inhabitants. They are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding seasons. Their active nature requires adequate swimming space and hiding spots in a home aquarium, making them an engaging species for enthusiasts to observe.

To successfully keep Chinamanfish in an aquarium, maintaining optimal water parameters is essential. Ideal water temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C, with a salinity of 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. The pH should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4 to mimic their natural habitat. A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and environmental enrichment.

Feeding Chinamanfish requires a varied diet to ensure their health and vibrancy. They thrive on a diet of high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped marine meats to replicate their natural foraging habits. It is important to feed them multiple times a day in small amounts to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.

In terms of compatibility, Chinamanfish are generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behavior towards similar species. It is advised to house them with other peaceful fish that occupy different niches in the aquarium. Acclimation should be done slowly to minimize stress, using a drip acclimation method over several hours. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks before introducing them to the main tank to prevent the spread of diseases.

Chinamanfish are suitable for shipping, provided they are packed carefully to minimize stress. Use insulated boxes with sufficient oxygen and water to accommodate their needs during transit. The temperature should be maintained between 20°C and 24°C to ensure their well-being. While not listed under CITES, it is crucial to ensure compliance with local regulations regarding wildlife trade.
