The Long-Finned Batfish (Platax teira) is a remarkable marine fish found primarily in the shallow coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around coral reefs. This species is characterized by its distinctive long, flowing fins that resemble wings, giving it an elegant appearance as it glides through the water. Adult Long-Finned Batfish can reach up to 60 cm in length, and their bodies are typically flattened, allowing them to blend seamlessly into their reef habitats.

In terms of behavior, Long-Finned Batfish are known for their unique swimming style, which involves a combination of fin movements and body undulations. They often use their pectoral fins to 'walk' along the ocean floor, which is a fascinating sight for divers and aquarists alike. These fish are generally social and can be seen in small groups, often hovering near coral structures where they find shelter from predators.

The natural habitat of the Long-Finned Batfish includes coral reefs and rocky substrates, where they feed on a variety of invertebrates. Their diet mainly consists of crustaceans and small mollusks, making them carnivorous. As they mature, their coloration can shift to a more subdued palette, which helps them to camouflage within their surroundings, enhancing their survival in the wild.

Due to their striking appearance and intriguing behavior, Long-Finned Batfish have become popular in the aquarium trade. However, they require specific care to thrive in captivity, making them suitable for experienced aquarists who can replicate their natural environment effectively.
When caring for the Long-Finned Batfish, it's essential to maintain stable water parameters to ensure their health and well-being. The ideal temperature range for these fish is between 24°C and 28°C, with a salinity level of 30-35 ppt. The pH should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4 to mimic their natural habitat. A minimum tank size of 400 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and to accommodate their social behavior.

Feeding the Long-Finned Batfish requires a diet rich in protein. A varied diet of high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and small crustaceans will promote optimal health. It's recommended to feed them 2-3 times a day in smaller portions to prevent overfeeding.

Compatibility is crucial when housing Long-Finned Batfish, as they can be territorial. They do well with other peaceful marine species but should be monitored closely when introduced to a community tank. Acclimation should be done gradually to minimize stress; drip acclimation is recommended to help them adjust to new water conditions.

Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the spread of diseases. Regular monitoring for signs of stress or illness is essential, and maintaining high water quality through regular water changes will benefit their overall health.
The Long-Finned Batfish is suitable for shipping, provided that proper care is taken to maintain their well-being during transport. Packing density should be moderate to allow for movement, and water temperatures should be kept stable, ideally between 24°C and 26°C. These fish are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so insulated packaging is recommended. It's important to check CITES regulations, as this species is not currently listed under CITES, ensuring that export is compliant with local laws.
