Grey Bamboo Shark

The Grey Bamboo Shark (Chiloscyllium griseum) is a fascinating species of carpet shark belonging to the family Hemiscylliidae. This species is predominantly found in the warm waters of the Indo-West Pacific Oceans, including areas from the Arabian Sea to the coasts of Indonesia and beyond. With a maximum length of approximately 74 cm, these sharks possess a slender, elongated body that is well-adapted to their benthic lifestyle.

The Grey Bamboo Shark is characterized by its distinctive coloration, featuring a pattern of dark brown to greyish hues with lighter spots, which provides excellent camouflage against the sandy and rocky substrates of its natural habitat. These sharks are typically found in shallow waters, often resting on the ocean floor during the day and becoming more active at night when they hunt for prey. Their diet mainly consists of small fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates.

Behaviorally, Grey Bamboo Sharks are known to exhibit relatively docile and curious traits, making them an interesting addition to aquariums. They are solitary creatures but can sometimes be seen in pairs during mating seasons. Their ability to adapt to various environments enhances their survival in the wild.

Habitat-wise, these sharks prefer coastal areas with sandy or rocky bottoms, often taking refuge in crevices or under ledges. Their presence in aquariums not only provides educational value but also promotes interest in marine conservation due to their ecological role in the marine ecosystem.

When caring for the Grey Bamboo Shark in an aquarium setting, it is crucial to maintain optimal water parameters. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C to 28°C, with a salinity level of 30-35 ppt. The pH should be maintained between 7.5 and 8.5 to create a suitable environment for this species. A minimum tank size of 500 liters is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and hiding.

Feeding these sharks requires a varied diet to ensure proper nutrition. They thrive on a diet consisting of high-quality marine pellets, frozen or fresh seafood such as shrimp, squid, and small fish. It is advisable to feed them small portions multiple times a week to mimic their natural feeding habits.

Compatibility with other tank inhabitants is generally good, as Grey Bamboo Sharks are non-aggressive. However, caution should be taken when introducing smaller fish, as they may be viewed as prey. Acclimation should be conducted slowly, allowing the shark to adjust to new water conditions gradually. A quarantine period of at least two weeks is also recommended to monitor for any signs of disease before introducing them to the main display tank.

Grey Bamboo Sharks are suitable for shipping, provided that proper care is taken during the process. They should be packed with adequate water volume to ensure comfort and minimize stress. The ideal temperature during transport should be maintained between 24°C and 28°C to prevent thermal shock. As a CITES Appendix II species, it is essential to follow all regulations regarding trade and export to ensure sustainable practices.
