The Achilles Tang (Acanthurus achilles) is a striking marine fish that captivates aquarists with its bold coloration and distinctive body shape. Characterized by its deep blue body adorned with bright orange and yellow markings, this species is often regarded as one of the most visually appealing tangs in the aquarium trade. The Achilles Tang can grow to a maximum size of about 25 cm (10 inches) and features a unique, triangular body that allows for swift movement through its natural reef habitat.

In the wild, Achilles Tangs inhabit the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the islands of Hawaii, where they are commonly found grazing on algae. These fish are diurnal and are known for their active swimming behavior, often seen darting between corals and rocks. They are social animals that thrive in groups, although they can display territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods or when kept in smaller aquariums.

The Achilles Tang's diet primarily consists of algae, making it an important herbivore in its ecosystem. In the aquarium, they require a varied diet that includes high-quality algae-based foods, seaweed, and occasional protein sources to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Their striking appearance and active nature make them a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts.

However, the Achilles Tang requires ample swimming space and a well-maintained environment to thrive. Providing a tank with plenty of hiding spots and a suitable reef-like structure is essential for their well-being. With the right care, these fish can live for many years in captivity, providing endless enjoyment for their keepers.
When caring for Achilles Tangs, maintaining proper water parameters is crucial. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C to 28°C, with a salinity of 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. The pH level should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4 to mimic their natural habitat. A minimum tank size of 300 liters is recommended to provide enough space for swimming and territorial behaviors.

Feeding should consist of a balanced diet rich in algae, supplemented with high-quality marine pellets, frozen foods, and occasional meaty items. Regular feeding will promote healthy growth and vibrant colors. Compatibility-wise, Achilles Tangs can coexist with a variety of fish but may be aggressive towards their own kind or similar species, especially in smaller tanks. Care should be taken when introducing new tank mates.

Acclimation is vital for reducing stress during introduction to a new environment. A slow drip acclimation process over several hours is recommended. Quarantine new arrivals for at least 2-4 weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before introducing them to the main display tank, ensuring the health of all inhabitants.
Achilles Tangs are suitable for shipping with proper care. They should be packed with adequate oxygen and space to minimize stress during transport. Ideal shipping temperatures range from 22°C to 26°C, as they are sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations. CITES status for this species is currently listed as not threatened, allowing for sustainable export practices.
