These marine fish display a variety of colors, including bright blues, greens, and yellows, making them a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts. Their unique coloration can vary significantly between species and individuals, often changing as they mature or during social interactions. This adaptability to their environment and the ability to change colors is one of the many traits that make Colour Wrasses special.

Naturally, Colour Wrasses inhabit coral reefs and rocky substrates in shallow waters, usually at depths ranging from 1 to 30 meters. They are often found in pairs or small groups, exhibiting a social structure that involves complex interactions. These fish are diurnal, meaning they are most active during the day when they forage for food and engage in social behaviors. Their diet primarily consists of small invertebrates, crustaceans, and zooplankton, which they hunt actively among the reefs.

Behaviourally, Colour Wrasses are known for their inquisitive nature and intelligence. They exhibit various social behaviors, including courtship displays and territorial disputes. Male Colour Wrasses are often more brightly colored than females and can be quite aggressive when defending their territory. During breeding seasons, males will engage in elaborate displays to attract females, showcasing their vibrant colors and agility.

As part of their natural history, Colour Wrasses play a crucial role in the ecosystem by helping to control populations of small invertebrates and promoting the health of coral reefs. Their presence indicates a healthy reef environment, making them an essential species for maintaining marine biodiversity.

For optimal care of Colour Wrasses, it is essential to maintain stable water parameters. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C and 28°C, with a salinity level of 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. A pH level between 8.1 and 8.4 is ideal. These fish require a minimum tank size of 200 liters to thrive, allowing ample space for swimming and establishing territories.

Feeding Colour Wrasses involves providing a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and chopped seafood. Regular feeding 2-3 times a day is recommended to ensure they receive adequate nutrition, promoting vibrant colors and healthy growth. Compatibility with other species is generally good, but care should be taken when housing them with aggressive fish or other wrasses, as territorial disputes may arise.

Acclimation is a critical process, and it is advised to introduce Colour Wrasses slowly to their new environment. A drip acclimation method over several hours can help reduce stress. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks before introducing them to the main tank to prevent the spread of potential diseases.

Colour Wrasses are suitable for shipping but require careful handling to minimize stress. Packing density should be kept to a moderate level to ensure adequate oxygenation during transport. Temperatures should be maintained between 24°C and 28°C to prevent thermal shock. They are not listed under CITES, making them easier to export. Proper packaging with oxygen and temperature control is essential for their survival during transit.
