The Coral Hogfish (Bodianus axillaris) is a captivating marine species native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. For optimal care, Coral Hogfish require stable water parameters that reflect their natural habitat. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C and 28°C, with a salinity level between 1.020 and 1.025 ppt. Maintaining a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4 is crucial for their health. A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots.

Feeding Coral Hogfish is relatively straightforward, as they are primarily carnivorous. A varied diet consisting of high-quality fish pellets, frozen or live foods like shrimp, and small mollusks will ensure their nutritional needs are met. Regular feeding, two to three times a day, is ideal to maintain their health and vibrancy.

Compatibility is an essential consideration when introducing Coral Hogfish into a community tank. They can be territorial and may not be suitable with smaller, more timid species. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before introducing them to the main tank. Acclimation should be done slowly to reduce stress, utilizing drip acclimation methods to adjust them to the new water conditions gradually.

Coral Hogfish are suitable for shipping, provided they are packed carefully to minimize stress during transport. A packing density of 1 fish per 10 liters of water is recommended. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a stable temperature between 24°C and 28°C during transit is essential. Currently, there are no restrictions under CITES for this species, allowing for legal export from Bali.
