The Red Starfish, or Fromia Monilis, is a striking invertebrate native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. Known for its vivid red coloration adorned with white spots, this starfish exhibits a pentamerous radial symmetry typical of echinoderms. Its arms are long and slender, allowing it to navigate through the crevices of rocky substrates and coral formations with ease. These fascinating creatures play a vital role in the marine ecosystem, contributing to the health of coral reefs by grazing on algae and detritus.

In terms of behavior, the Red Starfish is generally slow-moving and prefers to remain in shallow waters where it can find ample food sources. Unlike many other starfish, they are not known for their ability to regenerate lost limbs as efficiently, making their conservation crucial in their natural habitats. As nocturnal feeders, they often come alive at night, exploring their surroundings in search of food.

Red Starfish inhabit a variety of environments, including sandy bottoms and rocky reefs, usually at depths ranging from 1 to 30 meters. They thrive in warm waters, often found among coral rubble and in tide pools, where they can safely feed and reproduce. Their habitat supports a diverse array of marine life, making their presence an indicator of a healthy reef ecosystem.

Due to their ecological importance and stunning appearance, the Red Starfish is increasingly sought after in the aquarium trade. However, sustainable collection methods are essential to ensure that wild populations remain stable and that the delicate balance of their ecosystems is preserved.
For optimal care of the Red Starfish, maintain water parameters that mimic their natural environment. Ideal temperatures range between 24-28°C, with a pH level between 7.8 and 8.4. Although they thrive in marine environments, they are not suitable for freshwater setups. It is crucial to provide a tank of at least 100 liters to accommodate their needs and ensure proper water circulation.

Feeding the Red Starfish can be achieved with a diet consisting of algae, detritus, and commercially available marine invertebrate foods. They may take to an aquarium more readily if supplemented with blanched vegetables or specially formulated starfish food. When selecting tank mates, choose peaceful species; avoid aggressive fish that may harass the starfish.

Acclimation should be done slowly to prevent shock, ideally over several hours. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for any signs of disease or stress before introducing them to the main tank. Regular water quality checks are recommended to maintain a stable environment, as sudden fluctuations can be detrimental to their health.
The Red Starfish is suitable for shipping under controlled conditions. When packing, ensure they are securely placed in water-filled bags with oxygen to prevent stress. Shipping density should not exceed 1 starfish per 5 liters of water to maintain water quality. They are sensitive to temperature changes; therefore, a stable temperature between 24-28°C should be maintained during transit. The Red Starfish is not currently listed under CITES, but sustainable collection practices should always be followed.
