Stylophora pistillata, commonly known as the Pink Smooth Cauliflower Coral, is a species of stony coral belonging to the Pocilloporidae family. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this coral is particularly valued for its attractive pink hue and distinctive cauliflower-like appearance. It plays a crucial role in reef ecosystems, providing habitat and shelter for various marine organisms while also contributing to the structural complexity of coral reefs.

The Pink Smooth Cauliflower Coral features a smooth surface with rounded, lobed structures that can grow into large colonies. Its polyps are typically small and extend during the night to feed, showcasing a vibrant display of color. This coral species exhibits a remarkable resilience to varying environmental conditions, making it a popular choice for aquarium enthusiasts and researchers alike.

In its natural habitat, Stylophora pistillata prefers shallow reef environments where it can thrive under moderate light conditions. It is often found in areas with strong water movement, which aids in nutrient exchange and helps to clear debris from its surface. This adaptability allows it to occupy a range of depths and locations across the Indo-Pacific, particularly in the Coral Triangle, an area known for its rich marine biodiversity.

Behaviorally, this coral is known for its rapid growth rate and ability to form dense colonies. It engages in a mutualistic relationship with zooxanthellae algae, which live within its tissues, providing the coral with essential nutrients through photosynthesis. This symbiotic relationship is pivotal for its survival and growth in both wild and aquarium settings, highlighting the importance of light availability in its care.
When caring for Pink Smooth Cauliflower Coral, maintaining optimal water parameters is crucial. Ideal temperature ranges between 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F) with a pH level of 8.1 to 8.4. Salinity should be maintained at 34-36 ppt, mimicking its natural reef environment. Adequate water circulation is essential to prevent sediment buildup and ensure proper nutrient flow.

Feeding this coral involves providing supplemental food, such as liquid coral foods or phytoplankton, particularly during the evening when polyps are extended. While it relies heavily on photosynthesis, offering additional nutrients can enhance growth and health.

Stylophora pistillata is generally compatible with a variety of tank mates, but caution should be taken with aggressive species that may harm its delicate structure. Acclimation should be done slowly to avoid stress, ideally over a period of several hours. Quarantine new specimens for at least two weeks to ensure they are free from pests and diseases before introducing them to the main display tank.
The Pink Smooth Cauliflower Coral is suitable for shipping due to its hardiness. During transport, it should be securely packed to minimize movement and damage. A temperature range of 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F) is recommended to ensure the coral remains stress-free. The species is not listed under CITES, allowing for easier export. However, maintaining low packing density is crucial to prevent stress during transit.
