The Spotted Tilapia (Pelmatolapia mariae) is a striking freshwater fish known for its distinctive spotted patterns. This species typically exhibits a mix of vibrant colors, with a predominance of greens and browns, making it visually appealing for aquarists. Adult individuals can grow up to 25 cm in length, showcasing a robust body and elongated fins that enhance their graceful swimming abilities.

Native to the freshwater rivers and lakes of Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia, Spotted Tilapia thrives in warm, shallow waters with abundant vegetation. In its natural habitat, it often occupies areas rich in submerged plants, where it finds both shelter and food. The species is known for its adaptability to various environmental conditions, which allows it to flourish in diverse aquatic ecosystems.

Behaviorally, Spotted Tilapia is generally peaceful, making it suitable for community tanks. They are social fish that enjoy the company of their own kind but can be territorial, especially during breeding seasons. This species exhibits fascinating breeding behaviors, where males display their vibrant colors to attract females, often engaging in complex courtship rituals.

The Spotted Tilapia plays a significant role in its ecosystem, contributing to the balance of aquatic life. As a forager, it feeds on a variety of organic matter, including algae and small invertebrates, which helps maintain the health of its habitat. This ecological significance makes the Spotted Tilapia not only an attractive addition to aquariums but also an important species in its native environments.
When caring for Spotted Tilapia, maintaining optimal water conditions is crucial. Ideal water temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C, with a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5. These fish thrive in well-filtered environments with moderate water movement, so investing in quality filtration is recommended. A minimum tank size of 150 liters is advisable to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial disputes.

Feeding Spotted Tilapia is straightforward, as they are omnivorous and accept a variety of foods. A balanced diet should include high-quality pellets, frozen or live food such as brine shrimp and daphnia, as well as plant matter like spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables. Regular feeding, 2-3 times a day, will promote healthy growth and vibrant coloration.

Compatibility is generally good with other non-aggressive freshwater species. However, caution should be exercised when introducing them to smaller fish or overly aggressive tank mates. Acclimation is essential when introducing Spotted Tilapia to a new tank; a slow drip method over several hours is recommended to minimize stress. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the introduction of diseases into your main display tank.
Spotted Tilapia is suitable for shipping, provided that they are packed carefully to ensure minimal stress. A packing density of 1 fish per 2 liters is recommended to allow enough space for movement. These fish are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a stable temperature between 24°C and 28°C during transit is crucial. As of now, Spotted Tilapia is not listed under CITES, which eases export regulations.
