The Big Red Gobies (Sicyopus sp) are a striking freshwater species known for their vibrant red coloration and unique body shape. These small gobies typically reach a maximum size of about 5 cm, making them an ideal choice for aquarists looking to add a splash of color to their tanks. Their elongated bodies are adorned with intricate patterns, allowing them to blend seamlessly with their natural environment, which includes rocky substrates and freshwater streams in their native habitats across Indonesia.

In the wild, Big Red Gobies inhabit freshwater rivers and streams that flow over rocky bottoms, where they can be found foraging among the stones and vegetation. Their natural diet consists mainly of small invertebrates and organic detritus, which they sift through the substrate. These fish exhibit fascinating behavior, often seen darting into crevices when threatened and displaying territoriality, particularly during breeding seasons.

Big Red Gobies are known for their peaceful demeanor, making them suitable tank mates for a variety of community fish. They thrive in groups, so keeping them in small schools is recommended to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress. These gobies are also adept at climbing and can often be found exploring the upper levels of their environment, which adds an engaging dynamic to any aquarium setup.

To maintain their health and vibrancy, it is essential to replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible, providing plenty of hiding spots and stable water conditions. Their captivating appearance and lively behavior make them a favorite among both novice and experienced aquarists alike.
For optimal care of Big Red Gobies, it is crucial to maintain stable water parameters. They prefer a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5 and a temperature between 22°C and 28°C. Soft to moderately hard water is ideal, with a general hardness of 5-15 dGH. These fish thrive in well-filtered tanks with plenty of hiding spaces created by rocks and plants.

Feeding Big Red Gobies is relatively straightforward; they are omnivorous and will accept a variety of foods including high-quality flake food, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. Regular feeding of small portions several times a day is recommended to ensure their health and color vibrancy.

In terms of compatibility, these gobies are peaceful and can be housed with other small to medium-sized freshwater species. However, care should be taken to avoid aggressive tank mates that may bully them. Acclimation should be done slowly to minimize stress, ideally over a period of a few hours, especially if they are being introduced to a new environment.

Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks before introducing them to the main tank to prevent the spread of diseases. Observing them during this period allows for any potential health issues to be addressed before they interact with other fish in the community tank.
Big Red Gobies are suitable for shipping due to their hardiness and adaptability. They should be packed in breathable bags with adequate oxygen and water to minimize stress during transit. It is recommended to maintain a shipping temperature between 20°C to 25°C. A packing density of 1-2 fish per liter is advisable to ensure they have enough space. These gobies are not listed under CITES, making export regulations more manageable.
