The Shusui Koi, a variety of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), is celebrated for its vibrant colors and distinct physical characteristics. Originating from Japan, these fish feature a unique scale pattern that includes large, prominent scales along their dorsal line, set against a backdrop of bright orange, red, or yellow hues. Their serene demeanor and graceful swimming make them a beloved choice among koi enthusiasts and aquarium owners alike.

In their natural habitat, Shusui Koi thrive in slow-moving freshwater environments, such as ponds, lakes, and rivers, where they can find ample vegetation and shelter. They are adaptable creatures that can tolerate a range of water conditions, although they prefer warmer waters typical of tropical and subtropical climates. The popularity of Shusui Koi has led to their introduction in various countries, where they are often kept in ornamental ponds and aquariums.

Behaviorally, Shusui Koi are known for their calm and sociable nature, making them excellent companions for other fish species. They exhibit a hierarchical social structure and can often be seen swimming together in schools. These fish are not only visually appealing but are also engaging to observe, as they display interesting behaviors like foraging for food and interacting with their environment.

As a domesticated species, Shusui Koi require proper care to thrive, including a balanced diet and suitable water conditions. Given their size and activity level, they benefit from spacious environments where they can swim freely and exhibit their natural behaviors.
For optimal health, Shusui Koi require well-maintained water parameters. Ideally, the water temperature should be maintained between 20°C to 25°C, with a pH range of 6.5 to 8.0. Regular water changes and filtration are crucial to keep ammonia and nitrite levels low. When feeding, a varied diet consisting of high-quality koi pellets, vegetables, and live foods will support their growth and coloration. It's important to feed them multiple times a day in small amounts to prevent overfeeding.

In terms of compatibility, Shusui Koi are generally peaceful and can be housed with other koi and compatible freshwater species. However, care should be taken to avoid aggressive fish that may stress them. When introducing new fish, a slow acclimation process is recommended to minimize stress and potential disease transmission.

Quarantine is essential for new arrivals; a separate tank should be used for at least two weeks to monitor for signs of illness before adding them to the main tank. This precaution helps maintain the health of your existing aquatic life and ensures a smoother transition for new fish.
Shusui Koi are suitable for shipping and can be packed efficiently for transport. It is recommended to use insulated boxes with ample oxygen and appropriate packing materials to minimize stress during transit. Maintaining a stable temperature between 20°C and 25°C is crucial, as they are sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations. Currently, Shusui Koi are not listed under CITES regulations.
