Yellow Tail Angel

The Yellow Tail Angel (Apolemichtys xanthurus) is a captivating marine fish native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. Characterized by its brilliant yellow tail and dorsal fin, this species displays a striking contrast with its predominantly blue body, making it a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts. The vibrant coloration serves not only as a visual spectacle but also plays a role in social interactions and territorial behaviors within its natural habitat.

In the wild, Yellow Tail Angels inhabit shallow coral reefs, where they can be found at depths ranging from 5 to 30 meters. They are often seen swimming among the coral structures, feeding on algae, small invertebrates, and detritus. This species is known for its active and curious behavior, often exploring its surroundings and displaying a range of social behaviors, including establishing hierarchies within groups.

The Yellow Tail Angel is a relatively hardy species, but it does require specific environmental conditions to thrive. They prefer well-maintained aquariums with ample hiding spots and stable water parameters. Their natural habitat relies heavily on the presence of live rock and coral, which should be replicated in captivity to provide both shelter and foraging opportunities.

In terms of appearance, adults can reach lengths of up to 25 cm, with females typically being slightly smaller than males. The vibrant coloration makes them not only stunning focal points in a marine aquarium but also engaging fish that exhibit interesting behaviors, such as territorial displays and interactions with other reef species.

For optimal care of the Yellow Tail Angel, aquarium importers should maintain stable water parameters. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C and 28°C, with a salinity level of 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. The pH should be kept between 8.1 and 8.4. A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to accommodate their active nature and provide ample swimming space.

Yellow Tail Angels are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet that includes high-quality marine flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Regular feeding will help maintain their vibrant coloration and overall health.

When introducing Yellow Tail Angels to a new aquarium, acclimation is crucial. Gradually introduce them to the tank over several hours to minimize stress. It is also advisable to quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before introducing them to the main display. They are generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards their own species, so it's best to ensure compatibility with other tank mates.

The Yellow Tail Angel is suitable for shipping due to its hardy nature, but care should be taken to maintain stable temperatures between 24°C and 28°C during transit. A packing density of 1 fish per 10 liters is recommended to reduce stress. This species is not listed under CITES, but compliance with local regulations is advised.
