Cross' Damsel

Neoglyphidodon crossi, commonly known as Cross' Damsel, is a striking species of damselfish native to the western and central Pacific regions. This species is characterized by its vibrant coloration, typically showcasing a mix of deep blues and yellows that make it visually appealing in any marine aquarium. Growing to a maximum length of about 10 centimeters (3.9 inches), this small fish is an excellent candidate for reef tanks and community settings.

In terms of natural history, Cross' Damsels are usually found in shallow coral reefs, where they inhabit rocky crevices and coral formations. They are known for their territorial nature, often claiming small areas of the reef as their own. This behavior can be particularly interesting to observe, as they interact with other fish and defend their territory against intruders. They are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day, and they exhibit social behaviors, often forming small groups or pairs.

The diet of Cross' Damsels mainly consists of zooplankton, algae, and small invertebrates, which they forage for around the reef. In captivity, they adapt well to various feeding regimes, accepting both flake food and frozen options. Their adaptability and hardiness make them suitable for both novice and experienced aquarists alike.

Cross' Damsels thrive in well-maintained marine environments, where stable water conditions are crucial for their health and vitality. Their natural habitat is rich in biodiversity, providing them with ample opportunities for foraging and social interaction, which is essential to their well-being in aquarium settings.

To ensure the successful care of Cross' Damsels, it is vital to maintain stable water parameters. Ideal conditions include a temperature range of 24-28°C, a salinity level of 1.020-1.025 ppt, and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are recommended to keep nitrate and phosphate levels low.

Feeding Cross' Damsels is relatively straightforward, as they are not particularly fussy eaters. A varied diet that includes high-quality flake food, frozen brine shrimp, and algae-based foods will keep them healthy. It is advisable to feed them multiple times a day in small portions to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.

In terms of compatibility, Cross' Damsels can be kept with a variety of other reef fish, although their territorial nature may lead to aggression towards similar-sized species. Providing ample hiding spots and territories within the tank can reduce conflict. Acclimation should be conducted slowly to prevent stress, ideally over several hours.

Quarantine is essential for new arrivals to prevent the introduction of diseases into existing tank populations. A separate tank for a 2-4 week quarantine period is advised, during which time food intake and behavior should be closely monitored to ensure they are healthy before introducing them to the main display tank.

Cross' Damsels are suitable for shipping due to their hardy nature. It is recommended to pack them in secure, insulated containers with adequate water volume to minimize stress. The shipping temperature should ideally be maintained between 22-26°C. These fish are not currently listed under CITES, simplifying export regulations.
