The marbled electric ray (Torpedo marmorata) is a fascinating species of electric ray belonging to the family Torpedinidae. Found in the coastal waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the North Sea to South Africa, this benthic fish thrives in a variety of habitats, including rocky reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy or muddy flats. It is well-adapted to environments with low dissolved oxygen levels, allowing it to inhabit tidal pools where few other species can survive.

In terms of morphology, the marbled electric ray exhibits a nearly circular pectoral fin disc and a muscular tail adorned with two dorsal fins of nearly equal size and a large caudal fin. Its coloration is typically a dark brown mottled pattern that provides effective camouflage against the ocean floor, although some individuals may be uniformly colored. Males typically reach lengths of 36–38 cm (14–15 in), while females are larger, growing to about 55–61 cm (22–24 in).

Behaviorally, these rays are known for their ability to generate electric shocks, which they use for navigation and to stun prey. Their diet primarily consists of small fish and invertebrates, which they detect using electroreception. Marbled electric rays are generally solitary but may be seen in small groups in areas rich in food sources.

Due to their unique adaptations and striking appearance, marbled electric rays are increasingly sought after in the aquarium trade, making them a valuable addition for aquarium importers and wholesalers looking to diversify their offerings.
When caring for marbled electric rays, it is essential to replicate their natural environment as closely as possible. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 20-24°C, salinity between 30-35 ppt, and a pH level of 7.5-8.5. A minimum tank size of 500 liters is recommended to provide adequate space for swimming and hiding.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet of high-quality meaty foods, such as shrimp, fish, and squid, offered several times a week to ensure proper nutrition. Compatibility with other species should be approached cautiously, as electric rays can exhibit territorial behavior, particularly during feeding times.

Acclimation should follow a slow drip method over several hours to minimize stress, and quarantine for at least two weeks is advisable before introducing them to a main tank. Regular monitoring for signs of stress or disease is crucial, as these rays can be sensitive to water quality changes.
Marbled electric rays are suitable for shipping, provided they are packed securely in insulated containers with sufficient water to minimize stress. The recommended packing density is 1 ray per 20 liters of water. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a stable environment between 20-24°C during transit is critical. This species is not listed under CITES, making export regulations more flexible.
