The Walking Shark, scientifically known as Hemiscyllium halmahera, is a fascinating species native to the shallow coastal waters of Indonesia, particularly around the islands of Halmahera and other parts of the Coral Triangle. This species is renowned for its unique mode of locomotion; it uses its pectoral and pelvic fins to 'walk' along the sea floor and even on land during low tide, making it a remarkable adaptation among marine fishes.

In terms of appearance, the Walking Shark has a slender, elongated body with a distinctive pattern of dark spots and stripes, which provides excellent camouflage against its natural habitat. Typically, adults can reach a maximum length of about 80 cm. Their coloration can vary based on their environment, which can range from light tan to darker shades, helping them blend seamlessly into the rocky substrates and coral reefs they inhabit.

Behaviorally, Walking Sharks are nocturnal and primarily feed on small invertebrates and fish. They exhibit a calm demeanor and are often seen resting on the ocean floor during the day. Their ability to move over land allows them to explore tidal pools and evade predators, enhancing their survival in their natural habitat. Walking Sharks are also known to be social creatures, often found in small groups, which adds to their unique character.

These sharks typically inhabit shallow waters, with rocky substrates and coral reefs providing both shelter and hunting grounds. They prefer environments with plenty of hiding spots, allowing them to ambush prey effectively. Their unique adaptations not only make them a subject of interest in marine biology but also an attractive species for aquarium enthusiasts looking to exhibit rare marine life.
When caring for the Walking Shark, it's essential to replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 24-28°C, a salinity level of 30-35 ppt, and a pH level between 7.5 and 8.5. A minimum tank size of 500 liters is recommended to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots. The tank should include rocky structures and live rock to mimic their natural environment.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet, including high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as shrimp, crab, and small fish. It is important to ensure they are fed regularly but avoid overfeeding, which can lead to water quality issues. Walking Sharks are generally compatible with other peaceful marine species, but caution should be exercised when introducing them to aggressive tank mates.

Acclimation should be done slowly to minimize stress; floating the bag in the tank for about 30 minutes and gradually introducing tank water can help. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before adding them to the main tank. Regular water changes and monitoring are crucial to maintain a healthy environment for this unique species.
Walking Sharks are suitable for shipping, provided they are packed in well-oxygenated water with adequate insulation to maintain temperature. A packing density of 1-2 individuals per 100 liters is recommended to minimize stress during transit. Temperature sensitivity is moderate; maintaining a shipping temperature between 24-26°C is ideal. This species is not listed on CITES, allowing for easier export regulations.
