The Zebra sole, scientifically known as Zebrias zebra, is a fascinating flatfish native to the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region. This species is renowned for its distinctive wacky striped patterns, which provide excellent camouflage among the sandy and rocky substrates of its habitat. The Zebra sole's ability to change color and blend into its surroundings makes it a compelling addition to any marine aquarium.

In terms of physical appearance, the Zebra sole features a flattened body with a unique arrangement of bold stripes that resemble a zebra's coat. These stripes not only contribute to its aesthetic appeal but also play a crucial role in self-defense against predators. The fish's eyes are positioned on one side of its body, allowing it to stay hidden while observing its environment. The natural habitat of the Zebra sole includes sandy and muddy bottoms in shallow coastal waters, often in areas with seagrass or coral reefs. This species thrives in environments where it can easily bury itself in the substrate, providing both safety and access to food. To successfully keep Zebra soles, aquarium importers and retailers should ensure water parameters closely mimic their natural environment. Ideal temperatures range from 24°C to 28°C, with a salinity of 30-35 ppt. Maintaining a stable pH of 7.8 to 8.4 is also crucial for their health. Given their bottom-dwelling nature, a minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended, allowing ample space for hiding and foraging.

Feeding Zebra soles requires a varied diet rich in protein. They thrive on high-quality frozen or live foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. It's essential to avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality. Compatibility-wise, these flatfish can coexist with other peaceful marine species but should be kept away from aggressive tankmates that may stress them.

Acclimation is vital for Zebra soles; a slow drip acclimation method over several hours is recommended to reduce stress from transport. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to monitor for any signs of disease before introducing them to the main display tank. This practice helps ensure the health and longevity of the Zebra sole in your collection.

Zebra soles are suitable for shipping, but care must be taken to maintain stable temperatures during transit. Packing density should allow for sufficient water circulation and space, ideally using insulated boxes to protect against temperature fluctuations. They are sensitive to sudden temperature changes, so maintaining a range of 24°C to 26°C during shipping is crucial. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions applicable to this species.
