The Kuruma Shrimp (Penaeus japonicus), native to the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region, is renowned for its sweet, tender meat and is a staple in various culinary traditions. This species can grow up to 23 cm in length and boasts a distinctive coloration, typically ranging from light pink to grey with subtle stripes and a slightly translucent shell that showcases its internal anatomy. Its robust pincers and elongated body make it easily recognizable among other shrimp varieties.

In the wild, Kuruma Shrimp inhabit coastal waters, estuaries, and mangrove forests, often found at depths of up to 30 meters. They are bottom-dwelling creatures that prefer sandy or muddy substrates where they can forage for food. As nocturnal foragers, they exhibit a range of behaviors, including burrowing into the substrate during the day and becoming more active during the night to hunt for small fish, crustaceans, and detritus.

Kuruma Shrimp are social creatures, often found in groups, which can enhance their feeding efficiency and provide protection from predators. Their ability to adapt to varying salinity levels makes them resilient; however, their preference for warmer temperatures and specific water conditions is critical for their growth and reproduction. The life cycle of these shrimp includes a larval stage that is planktonic, emphasizing the importance of suitable nursery habitats in coastal environments.

Due to their high market demand, Kuruma Shrimp are often cultivated in aquaculture settings, which has led to increased interest in their sustainable farming practices. As a result, they have become a popular choice for both commercial fisheries and aquarium enthusiasts alike, valued for their taste and ecological significance in marine ecosystems.
For importers and retailers, maintaining optimal water conditions for Kuruma Shrimp is essential. The recommended temperature range is between 22°C and 28°C, with a salinity of 25-35 ppt for best results. Regular water changes and monitoring of parameters such as pH (7.5 to 8.5) will help ensure a healthy environment. Kuruma Shrimp are omnivorous, feeding on a diet that includes high-quality pellets, algae, and small bits of meaty foods such as shrimp or fish flakes.

In terms of compatibility, these shrimp can coexist with peaceful fish species but should be kept away from aggressive tankmates that may pose a threat. Acclimation should be done gradually, introducing them to the new environment slowly to prevent stress. Quarantine new shipments for at least two weeks to monitor for diseases or parasites before introducing them to a display tank.

Providing adequate hiding spots with rocks, plants, or artificial structures will help reduce stress and allow the shrimp to thrive. Regular observation is crucial to ensure that all shrimp are feeding well and displaying normal behavior, which indicates a healthy environment.
Kuruma Shrimp are suitable for shipping, provided they are packed securely with appropriate aeration. A packing density of up to 1 kg per liter can be maintained, ensuring they are comfortable during transit. They are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, so maintaining a stable temperature between 22°C and 26°C during shipping is essential. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions on this species, facilitating international trade.
