Red-Banded Shrimp

Stenopus hispidus, commonly known as the Red-Banded Shrimp, is a striking decapod crustacean found predominantly in coral reef environments. This species is easily recognizable by its bright red and white banded coloration, which serves not only as a warning to potential predators but also as a camouflage amidst the vibrant corals and anemones. Typically, they can grow up to 8 cm in length and have a slender, elongated body structure that allows them to navigate through crevices in the reef with ease.

To ensure the health and longevity of Stenopus hispidus in an aquarium setting, maintaining optimal water conditions is crucial. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C and 28°C, with a pH level between 8.0 and 8.4. While salinity is not a concern for this freshwater species, maintaining stable water quality is essential for their well-being. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide adequate space for swimming and hiding.

Feeding Red-Banded Shrimp is straightforward, as they are omnivores and will accept a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Regular feeding will encourage their natural cleaning behaviors, which is beneficial for tank mates. Compatibility with other species is generally good, but caution should be exercised with aggressive fish that may see them as food.

Acclimation is critical for the successful introduction of Red-Banded Shrimp to a new environment. A slow drip acclimation method is recommended to help them adjust gradually to water parameters. Quarantine is also advised for at least two weeks before introducing them to a display tank, to prevent the spread of potential pathogens or parasites.

Red-Banded Shrimp are suitable for shipping due to their hardy nature. When packed properly, they can endure transport, but it is crucial to maintain water temperatures between 22°C and 26°C to minimize stress. A packing density of 1 shrimp per liter is advisable to ensure adequate oxygen levels. This species is not listed under CITES, making export regulations more straightforward.
