The Terapusha Crab, scientifically known as Geosesarma sp., is a captivating freshwater invertebrate native to the tropical rainforests of Bali, Indonesia. This species is known for its vibrant coloration, which can range from deep reds and oranges to bright yellows and blues, allowing it to stand out in any aquarium setting. With a compact body and distinct, clawed appendages, these crabs exhibit a fascinating morphology that makes them a favorite among aquarists and collectors alike.

In the wild, Terapusha Crabs inhabit freshwater streams and rivers, often found among leaf litter and rocky substrates where they can hide from predators. They are semi-aquatic and require both land and water areas to thrive, making them a unique addition to aquascapes designed to mimic their natural habitat. These crabs are also known for their intriguing behavior, as they are often seen climbing and exploring their environment, showcasing their agile movements and adaptability.

Terapusha Crabs are primarily nocturnal, becoming active at night to forage for food and socialize. They exhibit territorial behavior, especially during mating season, where males will display their vibrant colors and engage in claw waving to attract females. Their social dynamics are essential for maintaining a balanced environment in captivity, as they can be both playful and aggressive depending on the conditions of their habitat.

This species plays a vital role in the ecosystem, contributing to the breakdown of organic matter and aeration of the substrate. Their presence indicates a healthy aquatic environment, making them more than just an ornamental addition to your collection; they are a vital part of the freshwater ecosystem they inhabit.
When caring for Terapusha Crabs, it's important to replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible. Maintain water temperatures between 24-28°C, with a pH level ranging from 6.5 to 7.5. A filtration system is crucial to keep the water clean, but avoid strong currents that can stress the crabs. Since they are semi-aquatic, provide a terrarium setup that includes both land and water areas, allowing them to climb and bask.

Feeding these crabs requires a varied diet; they are omnivorous and thrive on a mix of high-quality pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein sources such as shrimp or worms. It’s essential to ensure that food is small enough for them to handle and consume easily. Monitor their feeding habits to avoid overfeeding, which can lead to water quality issues.

Compatibility is key when housing Terapusha Crabs with other species. They can be aggressive towards their kind, especially males, so it’s best to keep them in groups of one male to several females or in larger tanks with plenty of hiding spots. Acclimation should be gradual to reduce stress; float the sealed bag in the tank for about 15-20 minutes before releasing them. Quarantine any new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the introduction of diseases into your main tank.
Terapusha Crabs are suitable for shipping, but care must be taken to ensure their well-being during transit. Pack them securely in breathable, damp materials to prevent dehydration. A packing density of 5-10 crabs per liter is recommended, with temperature control maintained between 24-28°C. These crabs are sensitive to extreme temperatures, so shipping should occur with minimal temperature fluctuations. As of the latest regulations, they are not listed under CITES, simplifying the export process.
