The Indian Treadfish (Alectis indicus), also called the Indian threadfin or diamond trevally, is a large and distinctive species belonging to the jack family, Carangidae. This coastal marine fish is widely distributed across the tropical Indo-West Pacific Ocean, with its range extending from East Africa to India, throughout Asia, and down to Australia. Adult Indian Treadfish typically inhabit coastal waters over reefs, often found at depths of up to 100 meters, while juveniles are more versatile, residing in estuaries and seagrass beds. This adaptability allows them to thrive in various environments.

In terms of appearance, Indian Treadfish are notable for their elongated bodies and slight concavity in the profile of their heads, distinguishing them from other species in the genus Alectis. They can grow impressively large, reaching lengths of up to 165 cm and weights of around 25 kg. Their coloration often features silvery scales that reflect light beautifully, earning them the nickname 'mirror fish' due to their shiny appearance.

Behaviorally, Indian Treadfish are carnivorous, preying on a variety of marine life including fishes, cephalopods, and crustaceans. They are known for their agility and speed, making them effective hunters in their natural habitats. Socially, these fish can often be observed in small groups, although they may also be solitary.

For importers and retailers, providing optimal care for Indian Treadfish is crucial for their well-being and successful acclimation. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 24-28°C, with salinity levels between 30-35 ppt, and a pH of 7.5-8.5. These fish thrive in well-oxygenated waters with ample space to swim, so a minimum tank size of 500 liters is recommended to accommodate their size and activity level.

When it comes to diet, Indian Treadfish are carnivorous and should be fed a varied diet of high-quality pellets, frozen or live foods such as shrimp, fish, and cephalopods. It’s important to ensure they receive a balanced diet to promote optimal growth and health. Compatibility-wise, they can be kept with other robust marine species but should be monitored closely due to their predatory nature.

Acclimation should be gradual to minimize stress; floating the bag in the tank for about 30 minutes and slowly mixing tank water into the bag can help. Quarantine new arrivals for at least two weeks to prevent the introduction of any diseases into existing systems. Regular monitoring of behavior and health is essential during this period.

Shipping Indian Treadfish requires careful consideration due to their size and sensitivity to temperature. Suitable packing density should allow ample space for movement, ideally limiting to one fish per 20 liters of water. Maintain water temperatures between 22-26°C during transit to reduce stress. As a species not listed under CITES, they do not face trade restrictions, facilitating international export.
