Six-Lined Wrasse

The Six-Lined Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia) is a captivating marine species native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly found around coral reefs. This fish is renowned for its vivid coloration, featuring six bold, horizontal lines that run along its body, contrasting against a bright blue and yellow background. Adult specimens can reach lengths of up to 10 cm (4 inches), making them a manageable size for aquarium enthusiasts.

This species is typically found in shallow waters, often hiding among coral crevices and rocky substrates. The Six-Lined Wrasse is an agile swimmer, displaying a lively demeanor as it forages for small invertebrates and zooplankton. Its natural behavior in the wild includes darting in and out of hiding spots, which makes it a delight to observe in aquariums.

Socially, the Six-Lined Wrasse is often seen in pairs or small groups, showcasing an interesting hierarchy within their social structure. They are known to be territorial, especially males, which can lead to aggressive interactions with other wrasses if not adequately managed. Their vibrant colors and playful activity levels make them a popular choice for reef aquariums, providing both aesthetic appeal and dynamic movement.

In terms of habitat, the Six-Lined Wrasse prefers warm, clear waters, typically found at depths of 1 to 30 meters. They thrive in environments rich in coral and rock formations, which provide ample hiding spots and foraging opportunities. This species plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of coral reefs by helping to control populations of small invertebrates.

For optimal care of the Six-Lined Wrasse, importers and retailers should maintain water parameters that replicate their natural habitat. The ideal temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C, with a salinity of 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. The pH should be maintained between 8.1 and 8.4. A minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and hiding spots.

Feeding should consist of a varied diet rich in protein, including high-quality pellets, frozen foods, and live foods like brine shrimp and small crustaceans. It is essential to offer a diverse diet to promote optimal health and coloration. The Six-Lined Wrasse is generally compatible with many reef-safe species; however, caution should be taken when introducing them to tanks with other wrasses due to potential territorial behavior.

Acclimation is crucial to reduce stress; a slow drip acclimation method is recommended to help them adjust to new water conditions. Quarantine procedures should be implemented for at least two weeks prior to introduction into the main display tank, allowing time to observe for any signs of illness and to ensure a smooth transition.

The Six-Lined Wrasse is suitable for shipping due to its hardiness; however, care must be taken to maintain appropriate water temperature during transit, ideally between 24°C and 28°C. Packing density should be moderate to ensure sufficient oxygen during shipping. This species is not listed under CITES, which facilitates export processes.
