The Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata rathbunae) is a captivating marine species recognized for its vivid red coloration and contrasting white stripes. This shrimp can be found inhabiting the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region, where it plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems by removing parasites and dead tissue from various fish species. These shrimp form symbiotic relationships with their fish hosts, which rely on them for grooming and cleaning services.

Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp typically grow to a maximum size of about 5 cm, showcasing a slender body that allows them to navigate through tight crevices in the reef. They possess long, slender antennae and a pair of chelae (claws) that they use to effectively clean fish. Their vibrant coloration not only makes them a popular choice for aquarists but also serves as a warning signal to potential predators regarding their unpalatable nature.

In terms of behavior, these shrimp are known for their social nature, often seen in pairs or small groups. They exhibit a fascinating cleaning behavior, where they wave their claws to attract fish that need cleaning. Once a fish approaches, the shrimp will meticulously inspect and clean the host, removing parasites, dead skin, and debris. This behavior is not only important for the shrimp’s diet but also for the well-being of the fish they service, which contributes to a healthy reef ecosystem.

Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp thrive in warm, shallow waters and are typically found at depths of up to 30 meters. They prefer environments rich in coral structures that provide shelter and abundant feeding opportunities. These shrimp are often seen in areas with high biodiversity, cohabitating with various species of reef fish and other invertebrates, making them an integral part of the marine community.
For optimal care of Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp, maintain water parameters that reflect their natural habitat. The ideal temperature range is between 24°C and 28°C, with a salinity level of 1.020 to 1.025 ppt. The pH should be stable between 8.1 and 8.4. A minimum tank size of 50 liters is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and grazing.

Feeding these shrimp involves a varied diet consisting of high-quality marine pellets, frozen foods, and live foods like brine shrimp. Regular feeding will ensure their health and encourage natural cleaning behavior. Compatibility is generally favorable, as they can coexist with a wide range of reef fish and invertebrates, although caution should be taken with larger or aggressive species that may prey on them.

Acclimation should be done slowly to reduce stress. Introduce them to a quarantine tank for at least two weeks to monitor for any diseases before adding them to the main aquarium. During this period, observe their behavior and ensure they are feeding well. Quarantine is crucial to prevent any potential introduction of pathogens into the main tank.
Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp are suitable for shipping, provided they are packed with care to minimize stress. Use insulated containers with adequate water and aeration to maintain stable temperatures. These shrimp are sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations, ideally shipped at 22°C to 25°C. CITES status is currently not applicable for this species, facilitating smoother export processes.
