Mastigias jellyfish, commonly known as the lagoon jellyfish, are striking marine organisms found predominantly in the warm coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific region. Characterized by their unique appearance, they feature a translucent bell-shaped body with a distinctive pattern of spots, which can vary in color from brown to green, depending on their environment and diet. This species typically reaches a size of up to 30 cm in diameter, making them a visually impressive species for aquariums.

Natural history reveals that Mastigias jellyfish thrive in shallow lagoons and coral reefs, often forming large aggregations. They have a fascinating symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae, photosynthetic algae that reside within their tissues. This relationship not only provides the jellyfish with essential nutrients but also contributes to their vibrant coloration. Their lifestyle is largely passive, drifting with ocean currents while utilizing their tentacles to capture planktonic food.

Behaviorally, Mastigias jellyfish are gentle creatures that pose no threat to most tank mates. They are known for their graceful movements, pulsating rhythmically as they swim, which can be mesmerizing to observers. In the wild, they can be seen floating serenely, often accompanied by small fish seeking refuge among their tentacles. However, they can still deliver a mild sting, which may irritate sensitive individuals.

Capturing the essence of the ocean, these jellyfish add a dynamic element to marine systems and can be a focal point in any aquarium display. Their unique biology and captivating presence make Mastigias a desirable species for aquarists looking to create a serene underwater environment.
Mastigias jellyfish require specific care to thrive in captivity. Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 22-28°C, a salinity of 30-35 ppt, and a pH level between 7.8 and 8.4. It is crucial to maintain stable conditions, as fluctuations can stress these delicate organisms. Additionally, a minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and to reduce water quality issues.

Feeding Mastigias jellyfish involves providing a diet rich in planktonic organisms such as brine shrimp nauplii and specially formulated jellyfish pellets. Feeding should occur 2-3 times a week, ensuring that food is finely dispersed to match their feeding mechanisms. Compatibility with other species should be considered carefully; while they are generally peaceful, it is advisable to avoid aggressive fish or species that may nip at their tentacles.

Acclimation is critical when introducing Mastigias jellyfish to a new environment. A slow drip acclimation method is recommended to help them adjust to the new water parameters gradually. Quarantine is also advisable to monitor for any signs of stress or disease before introducing them to the main display tank, ensuring a healthy and vibrant addition to your marine collection.
Mastigias jellyfish are sensitive to temperature changes and require careful handling during shipping. They should be packed in insulated containers with ample water to ensure their safety, with a recommended packing density of up to 10 jellyfish per 100 liters of water. Maintaining a stable temperature between 22-24°C during transit is essential to minimize stress. Currently, there are no CITES restrictions for this species, facilitating smoother export processes.
